Top 10 Anime Studios, Ranked by Their Best Work
Studios are the authors of anime as much as any mangaka. The best ones leave a signature you can spot in a single frame: the soft light of a Kyoto Animation classroom, the glowing particle effects of an Ufotable sword fight, the rubbery, joyful motion of a Trigger brawl. This ranking of the best anime studios weighs three things: the height of their best work, how consistent they are from show to show, and how much they changed what everyone else does.
One rule before we start. Studio Ghibli is set aside in its own section at the end, because a film studio that made Spirited Away would sit at number one on any list and make the comparison meaningless.

Top 10 anime studios, ranked by their best work
1. Madhouse
No studio has a deeper catalog of masterpieces. Madhouse made Perfect Blue and Paprika with Satoshi Kon, Monster, Death Note, the 2011 Hunter x Hunter, the first season of One Punch Man, and most recently Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. What ties them together is range. Madhouse can do slow psychological drama, explosive action and quiet melancholy, and it does all three at the top of the medium.
Why it ranks first: its peak spans four decades, and Frieren proved in 2023 that the peak is still happening.
2. Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation, usually called KyoAni, has the most consistent animation quality in the industry. Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice, Hyouka, Clannad and Sound! Euphonium all share the same care for small gestures: hands, hair, the way light falls through a window. The studio also trains and employs its animators in house instead of leaning on freelancers, which is a big part of why the quality never dips. After the 2019 arson attack that killed 36 people, its return to production is one of the most moving stories in the industry.
Why it ranks second: no misses, only a slightly narrower range than Madhouse.
3. Ufotable
Ufotable built its reputation on Fate/Zero and the Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel films, then went global with Demon Slayer. Its trick is compositing, the stage where hand drawn animation, 3D backgrounds and digital effects are blended together. The water and flame breathing effects in Demon Slayer set a new bar for what television action could look like.
Why it ranks third: the best looking action in anime, though its catalog is smaller and mostly adaptations of just two franchises.
4. Bones
Bones was founded by former Sunrise staff, and its animators are some of the best pure movers in the business. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is still the most complete adaptation of a manga ever made, Mob Psycho 100 is a showcase of experimental animation, and My Hero Academia brought the studio to a mainstream audience for nearly a decade.
Why it ranks fourth: two near perfect series, plus a long running hit.
5. MAPPA
MAPPA is the dominant studio of the 2020s. Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, the Attack on Titan Final Season and Vinland Saga season two all came from it within a few years. That output came at a human cost: reports of brutal schedules and overworked staff followed the studio through the decade, and fans noticed the strain in some episodes.
Why it ranks fifth: the biggest hits of the era, held back by consistency and working conditions.
6. Wit Studio
Wit animated the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, the first season of Vinland Saga, Ranking of Kings and, with CloverWorks, Spy x Family. Its strength is scale: crowds, cities, armies and huge creatures that still feel heavy and real.
Why it ranks sixth: it launched the series MAPPA later finished, and its own original work is excellent.
7. Trigger
Nobody else moves like Trigger. Founded by the team behind Gurren Lagann, the studio makes loud, colorful, kinetic animation: Kill la Kill, Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and, in a calmer register, Delicious in Dungeon. Edgerunners in particular brought a wave of new viewers to anime in 2022.
Why it ranks seventh: the strongest personality on this list, with a few uneven originals.
8. Production I.G
Production I.G is the prestige house. Ghost in the Shell (1995) shaped decades of science fiction, Psycho Pass is a smart cyberpunk crime drama, and Haikyuu is arguably the best sports anime ever made.
Why it ranks eighth: enormous influence, fewer recent standouts.
9. Studio Bind
Studio Bind was founded to adapt Mushoku Tensei and did it better than almost anyone expected. The show’s backgrounds, everyday movement and patient pacing turned a controversial light novel into one of the best looking isekai series.
Why it ranks ninth: one series, made with unusual care.
10. Science SARU
Science SARU was founded by director Masaaki Yuasa, and his loose, expressive style still shapes the studio after his departure in 2020. Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Dandadan all feel like nothing else airing in their season.
Why it ranks tenth: the most distinct visual voice of the newer studios.
Why Studio Ghibli is excluded
Studio Ghibli, the house of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, would rank first on any list that includes film. My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron are the reason many people around the world watch anime at all. Ranking it against television studios would be unfair to everyone else.

Best anime studios FAQ
What is the best anime studio of all time?
For television, Madhouse has the strongest catalog. For film, Studio Ghibli.
Which studio animates Demon Slayer?
Ufotable animates Demon Slayer.
Which studio made Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man?
MAPPA produced both.
Is Kyoto Animation still making anime?
Yes. KyoAni rebuilt after the 2019 attack and continues to release series and films.
My take: Madhouse over Kyoto Animation is close, and if I were an animator I would rather work at Kyoto, because it pays and trains its staff in house. But a ranking of best work has to reward range, and Madhouse has made a horror thriller, a shonen epic, a satire of superheroes and a gentle fantasy about grief, all at the top of their genres. The bigger point is what this list says about the industry. The studios that last, Madhouse, KyoAni, Production I.G, are the ones that protect their people and say no to rushed schedules. The studio that dominated this decade, MAPPA, did it by saying yes to everything, and that is not sustainable. My prediction: within five years, the studios at the top of this list will be the ones that slowed down, not the ones that made the most shows. Watch Frieren and A Silent Voice back to back and you will see what patience buys.
