Top 10 Shonen Anime for Beginners
Shonen is the front door of anime for most people, but the wrong first show can send someone right back out. These ten are ranked on how fast they hook a newcomer, how manageable the episode count is, and how well they represent what the genre does best.
The rankings
- Demon Slayer. Short seasons, gorgeous animation and a story simple enough to follow while eating dinner. The ideal first shonen.
- Jujutsu Kaisen. Modern, fast and stylish, with a power system that explains itself as it goes.
- My Hero Academia. Superheroes are a familiar language, and the school setting eases people in.
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. A complete 64 episode story with an ending. Great for people who hate open loops.
- Hunter x Hunter (2011). Longer, but it teaches you how shonen works better than anything else.
- Mob Psycho 100. Three short seasons and a heart the size of a planet.
- Haikyuu. Proof that shonen does not need superpowers. Volleyball has never been this tense.
- Chainsaw Man. Loud, weird and only twelve episodes plus a film. Perfect for someone who thinks anime is too polite.
- Spy x Family. The easiest recommendation for a mixed room.
- One Piece. Last on purpose. It is the best of them, but a thousand episodes is not a starting point.
What to avoid first
Naruto and Bleach are wonderful but filler heavy, and Attack on Titan is technically shonen but hits differently. Save them for the second round.
My take: Demon Slayer is the answer for almost everyone. Get them through Rui, and they will ask you what to watch next. That is the whole job.
