Made in Abyss Awakening Mystery Reveals Nishagora
Made in Abyss is heading back to theaters, and the first film in its new series just showed its hand. Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery released a batch of new scene stills, including the first look at Nishagora, a brand new character for the movie.
A new film series for the deepest anime
Awakening Mystery is the opening installment in a planned theatrical run rather than a one off, which tells you the franchise is committing to the long descent. Akihito Tsukushi’s story about Riko, Reg and Nanachi pushing deeper into a hole that rewrites your body as punishment for climbing back has always worked best when it takes its time, and films give the production the budget to make each layer feel enormous.
The new stills lean into the series signature contrast: gorgeous, storybook environments hiding something terrible. Nishagora’s design fits that mold, and the fact that the film is introducing new characters at all suggests it is expanding the world rather than simply retelling it.
What we do not know yet
A release window has not been attached to the stills. Given how much the franchise has been ramping promotion, an announcement feels close.
The stills were reported by Anime Corner.
My take: Made in Abyss on a theatrical budget is the version this story always deserved. I am nervous about what Nishagora turns out to be, which is exactly the feeling this series wants.
