Ken Kaneki is a college student who loves reading horror novels at his favorite cafe. When a girl named Rize asks him out on a date, he thinks he’s the luckiest guy alive. But on their date, she reveals she’s a ghoul and attacks him, biting into his neck and stabbing him with dark tendrils. Steel beams fall and crush her, killing her instantly. Kaneki barely survives, but the doctor transplants Rize’s organs into him to save his life, turning him into a half-ghoul. Now he can’t eat normal food, everything tastes rotten, and only human flesh is edible to him. Starving and desperate, he’s saved by Touka and Yoshimura from Anteiku cafe, a sanctuary for ghouls in the 20th ward. As Kaneki struggles with his new identity, he must learn to survive in a world where humans hunt ghouls and ghouls hunt humans.
