Arrogance and Virtue Manga Adaptation to Wrap Up in Third Volume
The manga adaptation of Mizuki Tsujimura’s novel Gōman to Zenryō, known in English as Arrogance and Virtue, is listed as ending in its third volume. That volume is scheduled to ship on December 19. The manga adaptation is drawn by Kaori Tsurutani, who is also known for creating BL Metamorphosis.
Tsurutani launched the series on Asahi Shimbun Publications’ web TRIPPER in June 2024, and the second compiled volume arrived on June 20. The original novel follows Kakeru Nishizawa and Mami Sakaniwa, two people who met through a dating app and got engaged. Mami then suddenly disappears, and Kakeru’s search for her forces him to learn things about her past that he was not prepared for. Tsujimura published the novel in 2019, with a paperback format following in 2022. A live-action film adaptation opened in Japan in September 2024.
Tsujimura has a number of well-known works. Lonely Castle in the Mirror has been released as an English novel by Doubleday, a manga by Seven Seas, and an anime film distributed by GKIDS. The novel Yami-hara is coming out in English from Yen Press, and Anime Supremacy! was published in English by Vertical. Tsurutani’s BL Metamorphosis, a five-volume manga about an elderly woman and a teenager who bond over a boys love manga, is available in English from Seven Seas Entertainment.
My take: Three volumes is short, but sometimes a tight, focused adaptation can be exactly the right approach for a mystery novel like this one. I am glad to see Tsujimura’s work getting this kind of attention given how strong her storytelling tends to be.
