100 Meters Anime Film Gets a Malaysian Fan Screening
The Malaysian cinema chain GSC is holding a fan screening for the anime film 100 METERS on October 25 at its Lalaport BBCC location. Attendees can look forward to some nice extras, including a random collectible ticket from five designs, an A3 key visual poster, and two art boards drawn by the original manga’s creator, Uoto.
Interestingly, the regular release date in Malaysia is listed as October 23, so the fan screening is actually taking place after the wider opening rather than before, despite being billed as an early event.
The film comes from director Kenji Iwaisawa, known for On-Gaku: Our Sound, and premiered in Japan on September 19. It has earned festival recognition too, appearing at Annecy in 2024 as a Work in Progress title and again in 2025 as part of the Official Selection.
The story is a heartfelt sports drama. A young man named Komiya, running to escape a hard reality, asks the gifted Togashi to help him get faster, and through their training the two form a deep bond. Komiya discovers a real passion for the sport, and the pair become rivals and friends on the 100 meter sprint track. Years later, after their paths diverge, they meet again and lay everything on the line in one final race.
The manga behind it was the first serialized work by Uoto, who also created Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, with a script by Yasuyuki Muto.
My take: Sports films about rivals who push each other to be better always get to me, and the festival buzz around this one is encouraging. I hope it reaches a lot more screens beyond these early showings.
