10 Best Fights in Isekai Anime History, Ranked
The isekai genre continues to be one of the most popular genres in anime, with new series releasing every season. The idea of being transported into a different world is a fantasy that remains appealing to countless fans. Yet more than seeing the different fantasy realms, fans seem to love the potential isekai anime has for showing off awesome fight scenes.
True, many isekai protagonists are often so overpowered it feels like they can’t even be challenged in a fight. However, that just makes it even more appealing when those characters do meet their match. The best isekai fights are flashy and exciting, keeping viewers engaged as the participants exchange techniques so powerful they might as well belong in Dragon Ball Z.
Cinque and Eclair vs. Princess Leonmitchelli Shows The Challenge Of Defeating A Ruler
Dog Days is a lesser-known isekai anime, since it appeared before the big anime boom that happened after Sword Art Online. A fantasy slice-of-life anime with surprisingly high stakes in the first season, the show is mostly known for fluffy moments and awesome fight scenes. Taking place in a world where they have battles basically like the Olympics, the first two episodes are basically one giant skirmish between two different countries.
The main battle in this skirmish occurs between the recently summoned from Earth Cinque, working with his new partner, Eclair, against the ruler of Galette, Princess Leon. Leon obliterates large swaths of the Biscotti Army before pushing both Cinque and Eclair to their limits, forcing them to learn to work together quickly. After an explosive signature move from Leon that Cinque and Eclair barely survive, they sneak in a surprise blow to bring the battle to a peaceful end. While fun, this battle is far from the best isekai anime fight of all time because it was just a mock battle.
Omnimon vs. Diaboromon Is Memorable To Digimon Fans Decades Later
Across its twenty-year history, Digimon features some of the best isekai fights of all time, yet few have offered more excitement to fans than Digimon Adventure: Our War Game’s battle between Omnimon and Diaboromon. Though he started as just a corrupted egg, Diaboromon continued to evolve until he was a threat not just to the Digital World, but the entire planet.
Capable of replicating seemingly infinitely, it took the combined efforts of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to fuse to even stand a chance. Fortunately, their merged powers allowed them to slow down Diaboromon long enough for the rest of the Digidestined to save the day. Omnimon doesn’t appear often, but his brief appearances have turned him into one of the coolest Digimon in the franchise.
The Shield Hero Team vs. The Glass Hero Team Shows Everything Naofumi Has Learned
The Rising of the Shield Hero shows the rare case of an “overpowered” hero that actually has to struggle for his victories. And one of the best ones came in Naofumi’s battle against Glass, a woman who pushed him to his limits once before. In the second round, Naofumi not only has to find a way to beat Glass, but defeat a group he’d counted as allies only days before.
This battle works as the perfect ending to Season 1, showing just how far Naofumi’s come as a leader and how much his allies have developed as a team. Facing Glass and her allies’ solid teamwork, it takes everything the group has just to keep pace. Naofumi nearly sacrifices himself by using the Cursed Shield to get the win, but fortunately, they manage to survive until the end of the wave to force a stalemate.
Ainz vs. Shalltear Is A Battle Of The Overpowered
The best fight scenes offer more of a back-and-forth rather than being a one-sided affair, which makes it hard for Ainz Ooal Gown to be considered usually. However, his battle against Shalltear Bloodfallen forces Ainz to get at least slightly serious. After learning Shalltear has been brainwashed by the Slane Theocracy, Ainz is forced to bring Shalltear down.
This Overlord battle feels like what would happen if Dragon Ball Z used spells instead of ki blasts. Both Ainz and Shalltear rotate through a dizzying amount of spells to attack and counter one another, proving just how far above the average human they really are. Eventually, it feels like they’re just making up moves to use on each other, forcing Ainz to rely on a power even Shalltear doesn’t have: the power of the wallet. Ainz calls on his seemingly limitless amount of funds to use legendary-tier weapons and spells to put Shalltear down for good.
Shibuya Raid Team vs. Eternal Moth Brings MMO Raid Battles Into Anime
Log Horizon isn’t a series that features a ton of incredible battles, as the series is mostly about politics and the mystery of how to escape the game world. However, the battle at the end of season two is one of the most impressive in isekai anime history. As a powerful new raid boss known as the Eternal Moth begins causing havoc not just for the adventurers, but the people of Elder Tale, Shiroe is forced to assemble a raid team to try and take it down.
This is a long, epic battle that takes the better part of two episodes to complete. Log Horizon always excelled at translating MMO mechanics into entertaining fights, but this represents the show’s peak. They manage to include all the different elements of tackling a raid boss, from the boss’ add-on enemies, to the multi-stages, to balancing dozens of fighters at once. It feels like a true Herculean effort to bring the Eternal Moth down, making it so much cooler when they finally win.
Makoto vs. Sofia and Lancer Forces Makoto To Finally Get Serious
Tsukimichi is another series where the protagonist becomes overpowered fast, so there aren’t many people capable of challenging him. Yet there was one exception at the end of the first season, where he was betrayed by the very goddess that summoned him. Out of nowhere, he was suddenly teleported into an ambush and forced to fight two high-level opponents at once in Sofia and Lancer.
The entire battle is one of Tsukimichi‘s few great showcases, as Sofia and Lancer are just strong enough to force Makoto to get serious after catching him off-guard. The result is a lot of high-level spells tossed back and forth between all three parties, a gorgeous visual free-for-all that makes the entire first season worth watching. That said, it ranks in fifth place largely because the moment Makoto got serious, it was over.
Kirito vs. Subtilizer Is A Visual Showcase
Sword Art Online‘s Alicization Arc is highly underrated, with a better story and far better animation than anything that came before. That’s likely why some people overlook Kirito’s battle against Gabriel Miller, or Subtilizer. With Kirito running out of time to log out of the Underworld, he’s forced to battle his strongest opponent yet.
The resulting battle is a visual showcase, as Gabriel unlocks his most powerful form to counter Kirito’s superior techniques. Fortunately, Kirito can rely on the aid of his best friend Eugeo one final time to help him gain the upper hand. This battle is both hype-inducing and touching for fans who followed Kirito’s long journey in the Underworld.
Rudeus Party vs. The Hydra Is A Team Effort
It almost feels like Mushoku Tensei‘s battle against the Hydra exists for all the people who think Season 2 was lackluster. The battle represents the culmination of several plots at once, with Rudeus finally rediscovering his master, Roxy, and finding his mother. With the help of his dad’s former adventuring party, the group only needs to take the hydra down to reunite the Greyrat family for good.
The hydra quickly proves not to be easy prey, though, forcing them to retreat just to come up with a real plan. Both encounters are a true visual spectacle, managing to show the group’s teamwork without slowing the battle down to explain everything. Though the battle ends in a major loss for Rudeus, it’s earned its spot as one of the most epic isekai anime fights of all time.
Rimuru Pushes His Limits To Fight Hinata To A Stalemate
Reincarnated as a Slime has some of the most overpowered characters in isekai, so most fights typically aren’t very close. However, periodically, the people of Tempest Village will find someone capable of punching in their weight class. While Rimuru himself is rarely challenged on that level, Hinata Sakaguchi proved she was capable of pushing the Demon Slime to his limits.
Part of what makes this Reincarnated as a Slime fight so much fun is how unexpected it is. After three seasons of Rimuru basically steamrolling any opponent, it’s fun to see him have to pull out all the stops. The two opponents go from a high-speed sword fight to tossing powerful magic spells at one another. In the end, the exciting match ends in a draw, allowing Rimuru and the gang to bring another powerful ally to their side.
Dead End vs. Dragon God Orsted Reminds Viewers There’s Always Someone Better
Each time people think Mushoku Tensei is more slice-of-life than anything, Studio Bind slips in some peak combat to remind us the show can’t be shoved into a box. In Episode 21, “Turning Point”, the group Dead End has finally managed to survive a long journey across the Demon Continent to make it back home. Yet before they can get to their home city, they encounter the Dragon God Orsted, one of the strongest fighters in Mushoku Tensei.
Despite spending most of Mushoku Tensei up to that point building their names as adventurers, it all comes to nothing against Orsted. Rujierd’s spear-fighting and even Eris’ sword skills are shut down in a matter of seconds, leaving it all to Rudeus. Yet even Rudeus introducing a brand-new spell isn’t enough to slow Orsted down, leading to Orsted punching a hole through Rudeus’ body. It’s only Eris’ tear-soaked cries for help that even led Rudeus to survive to see a second season.
