Making Magic Light Novel Review: A Gentle Isekai
Making Magic: The Sweet Life of a Witch Who Knows an Infinite MP Loophole is a new isekai light novel from author Aloha Zachou with illustrations by Tetubuta. The English release comes from J Novel Club, translated by Emily Hemphill, and arrived on September 9, 2025.
The premise follows a girl reborn into a world of monsters and dungeons. She has a skill called Creation Magic that lets her make almost anything, as long as she has the mana for it, and she has figured out a quiet loophole to grow her mana pool a little each day. She gives herself the name Chise and sets out as a twelve year old witch, happy to wander, help people, and look for a place to belong.
One idea that gives the book a bit of character is time. Chise will live far longer than the people around her, so the story opens well in the future before settling closer to the present. She also starts as something of an amnesiac, aware that she has been reincarnated but not of the details, which is a small twist on the usual setup.
Even so, the reviewers found it a middling read. It sits on the lower end of the isekai shelf, with a habit of lingering on details that do not move the plot along, which can make it feel like a slog in places. It is described as the kind of isekai that mainly pleases readers who already love the genre.
There is potential here, especially in the long shared life of Chise and her companion Teto, but the early going does not do enough to make a strong case. It is not a bad book so much as a familiar one.
My take: A comfy, low stakes isekai can be a nice place to relax, even when it does not break new ground. If the premise of an immortal little witch appeals to you, it may still be worth a gentle look.
