The Darwin Incident Anime Reveals Cast and January 2026 Debut
The team behind The Darwin Incident (Darwin Jihen) television anime had plenty to share on Friday. The show’s official site dropped its first promotional video, introduced three main cast members, and revealed a key visual.
The series is due to debut in January 2026 on TV Tokyo and its affiliated stations. Naokatsu Tsuda, known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, is directing at BELLNOX FILMS, with Katsuichi Nakayama as series director and Shinichi Inotsume writing the scripts.
Rounding out the staff, Shinpei Tomooka is handling character designs, Arisa Okehazama and Mariko Horikawa are composing the music, and Yoshikazu Iwanami serves as sound director. It is a strong crew for a story that does not shy away from heavy themes.
The manga, created by Shun Umezawa, follows Charlie, a half human and half chimpanzee hybrid known as a “Humanzee” who was born in a research lab. Now 15 and raised by adoptive parents, he is starting high school and makes his first real friend in a sharp loner named Lucy. His quiet life falls apart when the animal rights extremists who freed his mother years ago return as terrorists set on taking him.
Umezawa began the manga in Afternoon magazine in 2020, and it has earned serious acclaim along the way, including the 15th Manga Taisho award in 2022 and an Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival that same year. Kodansha USA Publishing handles the English release, which reached its eighth volume in September.
My take: A thoughtful science fiction story willing to wrestle with what it means to be a person is right up my alley, and that award shelf is no accident. I am hoping the anime keeps the manga’s bite rather than softening it.
