Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits Returns This Fall
One of the most quietly comforting anime around is back. Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits has returned, and it carries the same soothing, autumnal warmth that made the first season such a gentle escape. If you are after something calm and kind this season, it belongs on your list.
For newcomers, the story follows Aoi Tsubaki, a young woman who can see spirits and once lived quietly alongside a few cute companions. Her peaceful life is upended when she is whisked away to the Hidden Realm, where she learns her late grandfather promised her as a bride to the ogre god Oodanna to settle a debt.
Rather than accept that fate, Aoi refuses to marry and resolves to repay the debt her own way, by cooking. She takes up work at the grand inn Tenjin-ya, serving heartfelt meals to its spirit guests and slowly winning over the Ayakashi around her, proving that good food and kindness can soothe even the loneliest hearts.
The new season picks up right where the first left off. There is a slight shift in the character art and animation style, which I personally found a little disappointing, but beyond that the return is lovely, opening with Aoi back in her cozy kitchen.
Best of all, this season promises to deepen the tender, growing bond between Aoi and Oodanna, which has always been the soft heart of the series.
My take: This is exactly the kind of warm, low stakes comfort watch I reach for when the days get colder. Even with the art change, I am simply happy to spend more time in Tenjin-ya.
