Haruhi Suzumiya’s Real Life School to Open to the Public
Fans of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya have a rare treat coming. The franchise’s staff announced on October 1 that Nishinomiya Kita High School, the real school that inspired the story’s North High and the alma mater of author Nagaru Tanigawa, will hold a special open campus event for locals and fans.
The event takes place on November 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with four reserved timeslots welcoming 250 guests each. Tickets cost 1,000 yen, roughly seven US dollars, and all 1,000 of them have already sold out.
Over the years, countless fans have quietly made the pilgrimage to the school thanks to the anime, but it had never been officially open to the public before. This first time opening is meant as a thank you to the fans and local residents who have supported the school for so long.
Visitors can look forward to recreated scenes from the anime as well as an augmented reality experience built for smartphones, bringing the series to life on its real life grounds.
There is a bittersweet reason for the timing, too. The school is set to merge with another and be renamed Nishinomiya Kurakuen High School in the 2027 school year, so this is a chance to celebrate the campus as fans have always known it.
My take: As someone who loves the idea of visiting the real places behind beloved stories, this melts my heart a little. Opening the doors before the school changes forever is a lovely farewell for fans and locals alike.
