CyberAgent Launches Studio Kurm With Mob Psycho 100 Designer Yoshimichi Kameda
CyberAgent has launched a new anime production studio called Studio Kurm. Maiko Okada, who has produced titles like Yaiba: Samurai Legend, Great Pretender, and Great Pretender razbliuto, is serving as president and CEO. Yoshimichi Kameda, known for designing the characters in Mob Psycho 100 and the aliens and yokai in DAN DA DAN, will join the studio as its representative creator starting in January 2026.
The stated goal of Studio Kurm is to give talented young creators a more active role in productions and ensure they receive appropriate compensation for their work. The studio also wants to develop new forms of animation expression and work toward building a more sustainable creative environment for Japanese animation.
CyberAgent already has significant history in the anime space. The company established Cygames back in 2011, which went on to produce games like Rage of Bahamut and Granblue Fantasy. Cygames launched an anime division in 2015 and the dedicated production subsidiary Cygames Pictures in 2016, eventually producing anime adaptations including Rage of Bahamut Genesis, Granblue Fantasy the Animation, and Uma Musume Pretty Derby. A joint anime investment fund with CyberAgent followed in 2017, backing titles such as Zombie Land Saga.
More recently, CyberAgent has expanded its creative holdings through acquisitions. The company picked up stage production company Nelke Planning in June 2023 and the creative company Nitroplus in June 2024. Earlier this year, CyberAgent also established another anime studio, CA Soa, headed by former Sunrise producer Masakazu Ogawa.
Studio Kurm appears to be CyberAgent’s most creator-focused venture yet, and bringing in someone with Kameda’s visual identity and track record is a strong way to signal what kind of work the studio is aiming to do.
My take: Yoshimichi Kameda’s visual work on Mob Psycho 100 and DAN DA DAN has been some of the most energetic and distinctive animation of the past decade. A studio built around giving that kind of creative talent room to lead sounds genuinely exciting, and I am curious to see what they produce first.
