Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon Anime Reveals Eight Cast Members
The television anime adaptation of Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon has unveiled eight new cast members during a live stream event. The newly revealed voice actors all play members of the Concord of the Tribes, the party that betrayed the story’s protagonist Light and set the entire plot in motion.
The anime premieres on October 3 on Tokyo MX, MBS, and other channels, with the first episode going live at midnight JST. HIDIVE is streaming the series internationally as it airs. The main cast for the protagonist Light was previously announced.
The series is based on Shisui Meikyou’s light novels with illustrations by tef. The full title translates as Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members. J-Novel Club has licensed the novels for English release. A manga adaptation by Takashi Ohmae launched in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket in May 2021 and has been licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. The 17th compiled book volume of the manga shipped on August 7.
The story follows Light, who after being kicked out of his party and nearly killed, discovers that his Unlimited Gacha skill starts summoning incredibly powerful companions. Three years later he has built his own kingdom deep in a dungeon and is ready to take his revenge one former ally at a time. Director Katsushi Sakurabi leads the production at J.C.STAFF. Hiroshi Ohnogi, known for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Kekkaishi, handles the series scripts. Yukie Suzuki designs the characters, and Ryō Takahashi composes the music. Tei performs the opening theme and Nowlu performs the ending theme.
My take: The isekai revenge premise is a well-trodden path but Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon leans into it with genuine enthusiasm. The dungeon kingdom setup gives the story room to grow and the J.C.STAFF production looks promising.
