Sailor Moon Returns to the ’90s With New Retro Anime Release for Official Anniversary Reveal

It’s anniversary time for Sailor Moon fans. The franchise’s official store is now celebrating its eighth birthday, and it’s doing so in retro style with the release of several new collectibles that take audiences back to the ’90s anime.

The Sailor Moon Store first opened in September 2017, offering a wide range of merchandise for fans of the iconic magical-girl anime and manga series. The store is a concession in the LeForet store in the heart of Harajuku but also soon spawned ‘petit’ stores around Japan, as well as expanded to sell items online. It also got an official refresh in 2024, which saw it gain official art from creator Naoko Takeuchi and a mural of panels from the manga featuring Sailor Moon and Neo Queen Serenity meeting in Crystal Tokyo. Now, the store’s eighth anniversary is seeing the release of some brand-new, store-original merch, including a limited-edition itasha-style bag and a range of other collectibles, from acrylic stands and mugs to stickers and clear files, all featuring art from the ’90s anime series.

Sailor Moon’s Official Store Reveals 8th Anniversary Merchandise With Neon ’90s Anime Style

The anniversary artwork is from Season 2 of the anime series and features the five Guardians, each in their individual dynamic pose, standing in front of a neon-inspired Tokyo backdrop. The art also includes a retro-style English language logo that differs from the usual one used either in Japan or English-speaking fandoms, in keeping with the neon aesthetic. The range of merch falls between 440 yen (~US$3) for the clear file to 1,980 yen (~US$13) for the mug and 2,530 yen (!$US17) for the face towel.

Meanwhile, the black bag being released for the anniversary is a reprint of a similar bag, but in white, that was released last year. It features three partitions in the main bag as well as a clear itasha-style pocket, allowing fans to show off their favorite Sailor Moon merch without worrying about losing their precious items. The bag also features Luna on the other side, as well as a bright pint bag charm that can be easily removed. It costs 7,480 yen (~US$50) and will go on sale in late October.
