Demon Slayer Breathing Styles Explained
There are fourteen breathing styles in Demon Slayer, and every single one descends from Sun Breathing, the original style created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Five core styles branch directly from the Sun, the rest branch from those five, and one, Moon Breathing, exists only because of the bitterest rivalry in the series. Here is every style, who uses it, and where it came from.

Sun Breathing: the one all others imitate
In the Sengoku era, Yoriichi Tsugikuni was born with the Transparent World and a body that could use what became the first breathing style. He was, by every account in the story, the strongest human who ever lived; Muzan met him once and still has nightmares centuries later. When Yoriichi tried to teach his style, almost nobody could replicate it, so he adapted it to each student’s strengths. Those adaptations became the five core styles: Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind and Stone. Sun Breathing itself survived only as a dance, the Hinokami Kagura, passed down through the Kamado family for generations until a boy who sold charcoal needed it against a demon on a snowy mountain.
Moon Breathing: the style born from envy
Yoriichi’s twin brother Michikatsu could not match him with the Sun, so he shaped his own imitation into Moon Breathing, then traded his humanity to Muzan to escape the thirteen year limit of his marked body. As Kokushibo, Upper Rank One, he refined Moon Breathing for over three centuries, stacking sixteen forms of chaotic crescent blades, the most of any style. Moon is the only breathing style wielded exclusively by a demon, which is the entire tragedy of the man in one sentence.
The five core styles and their Hashira
Water is the most adaptable and the most taught, eleven forms that flow around any opponent. It produced two of the series’ most important swordsmen in Giyu Tomioka and Tanjiro himself, who begins with Water before his body pulls him back toward the Sun. Flame is the style of conviction, carried for generations by the Rengoku family; Kyojuro’s ninth form against Akaza is the moment the series stopped being a fun shonen and became a story about loss. Thunder concentrates everything into the legs; Zenitsu, unable to learn any form except the first, polished that single draw into a sevenfold god of speed, and his self made seventh form exists nowhere else. Wind is pure aggression, nine forms of shredding claws that fit Sanemi’s scarred, furious style. Stone is the rarest and, per the story itself, the strongest core style, and Gyomei, the blind Hashira with a flail and axe, is called the strongest Demon Slayer of the era outright.
The branch styles: personality made technique
Every branch style exists because someone could not fit the mold. Tengen was too flamboyant for Thunder, so Sound adds explosives and battlefield rhythm analysis. Muichiro drifted out of Wind into Mist, whose seventh form he invented mid fight against an Upper Rank at fourteen. Kanae softened Water into Flower; her sister Shinobu, too small to cut off a demon’s head, turned Flower into Insect and replaced decapitation with wisteria poison, the single most creative workaround in the corps. Obanai bent Water into the coiling strikes of Serpent, and Mitsuri, whose muscles are eight times denser than a normal person’s, turned Flame into Love, whipping a blade soft enough to fold. Inosuke, raised by boars, invented Beast on his own without knowing breathing styles existed, which quietly makes him the only person besides Yoriichi to create a style from nothing.
How breathing actually works in this world
Underneath the elemental visuals, every style runs on the same engine: Total Concentration Breathing, a technique that floods the blood with oxygen to push a human body to its ceiling. The visible water and flames are the anime showing you the practitioner’s form, not literal magic; inside the story, a bystander would just see an impossibly fast swordsman. The corps’ real graduation line is Total Concentration Constant, holding that state every hour of the day, even asleep, which is what separates Hashira from everyone else. Tanjiro spends an entire arc learning it with exploding gourds. It is the least glamorous power up in the series and the one that actually creates its monsters.
Marks, red blades and the Transparent World
The styles have a ceiling above the Hashira level. Fighters pushed to the brink, heart racing past two hundred, body over thirty nine degrees, can awaken a Demon Slayer Mark that multiplies their strength, and marked users can sometimes turn their blades crimson, one of the few things that stops an Upper Rank’s regeneration. Above even that sits the Transparent World, perception of muscle and blood flow that Yoriichi was born seeing. The cost is the reason the corps kept it quiet: with one known exception, every marked user dies by twenty five. The mark is not a gift on top of the breathing styles; it is the body burning its whole future for one fight. That trade is the series in miniature.
Questions fans keep asking
What is the strongest breathing style in Demon Slayer?
Sun, without argument: it is the origin, effective against every demon, and the only style Muzan actively fears. Among the others, the story names Stone as the strongest core style, and Moon deserves mention for sheer form count, though its power owes as much to Kokushibo’s demon body as to the style.
Why can Tanjiro use Sun Breathing?
The Kamado family preserved it for centuries as the Hinokami Kagura, a ritual dance performed each new year, never knowing the dance was the first breathing style. Tanjiro’s father performed it perfectly despite his frail body, and Tanjiro unlocks it under mortal pressure against Rui.
Can one person use two breathing styles?
Yes, and the protagonist is the proof. Tanjiro fights for most of the series with a blend, opening with Water forms his body can sustain and switching to Hinokami Kagura for finishing moves, eventually chaining them into hybrid attacks. Kaigaku also carried Thunder into demonhood the way Kokushibo carried Moon. What nobody does is master two styles fully; the body tunes itself to one engine, and the blend is always a workaround, not a doubling.
Are breathing styles based on real sword schools?
Loosely. Total concentration breathing exaggerates real breath control from Japanese martial arts, and the named forms echo the poetic technique names of historical kenjutsu schools, but the elemental effects are pure fantasy; the anime’s visual effects are explicitly stylistic, not literal flames or water.

My take: The breathing styles are the best power system in modern shonen precisely because they are a family tree of failure. Almost every style exists because someone could not do it the right way and refused to quit. Zenitsu mastering one form out of six is not a limitation, it is the whole thesis of the series wearing a haori.
