With Naruto back on screens through its commemorative specials, the eternal playground argument deserves a fresh answer: who is actually the strongest?

The rankings

1. Kaguya Otsutsuki. The progenitor of chakra itself, a being the entire shinobi world exists downstream from.

2. Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths. The god who split the beast and started history.

3. Naruto Uzumaki. Six Paths Sage Mode with Kurama made him the strongest living shinobi of his era.

4. Sasuke Uchiha. The Rinnegan, the eternal rival, forever half a step behind by choice as much as fate.

5. Madara Uchiha. As the Ten Tails jinchuriki he was a one man apocalypse who needed divine intervention to lose.

6. Hashirama Senju. The God of Shinobi, the standard every generation measured itself against.

7. Obito Uchiha. Kamui made him nearly unhittable and the war’s true architect.

8. Itachi Uchiha. Limited by illness and still legendary. The gap between his power and his legend is the point.

My take: Itachi in the top eight with a terminal illness and a broken heart is the most Naruto thing about Naruto. Power in this series was never really about chakra.
