How fear becomes power

Every devil embodies a concept humans dread, from chainsaws to guns to darkness. Common fears produce foot soldiers. Ancient, universal fears produce monsters. The Primal Devils, embodying terrors like darkness that predate language, sit near the top of the pyramid, never having tasted death. Above the visible hierarchy looms the Death Devil, the fear no living thing escapes.

The special cases

Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, holds a unique horror: devils he eats are erased from existence, which makes him feared by the fearsome. Makima, the Control Devil, embodies domination itself, and her ambitions shaped the entire first part of the story. Hybrids like Denji blur the categories further, part human, part devil, fully expendable in the eyes of both sides.

My take: Fujimoto built the smartest power system in modern shonen by asking one question: what are people actually afraid of? Everything else in Chainsaw Man grows from that seed.
